The Faith of Unborn Children

Check Out / View Cart

The Faith of Unborn Children is a witness to the value of children before birth and a call for a return to that historic Christian concern for the preservation of such valuable life. The author, Johann Georg Walch, was a professor of exegesis, philosophy, and theology at Jena, Germany, and is, perhaps, best known for editing an edition of Luther’s works which later became the St. Louis edition

(“Walch 2”).

The style of his theological argument is one which our American Lutheran forebears, such as H.H. Muhlenberg and C.F.W. Walther, knew well.

This second edition is completely reformatted making Walch’s classical Lutheran approach of presenting and defending these theses a little easier to read.

Dr. James I. Lamb, Executive Director of Lutherans For Life says, “The question of the faith of unborn and unbaptized babies has always been an important one for Lutheran Christians. In an age when so many abortions are performed every day, the question becomes even more critical to address. We hope this book will be helpful in doing so.

“Regardless of your thoughts on this treatise, however, one thing is very clear. The question of the value and dignity of unborn human life is assumed and never brought into the discussion. As Dr. Jean Garton says in her foreword, ‘Whether it is a compelling argument for the faith of unborn children, theologians will, no doubt, continue to debate. But one thing is certain: This book demonstrates the unquestioned high regard with which the Christian Church, until recent times, has viewed the unborn child.’”

The Faith of Unborn Children

Table of Contents Stated in Theses

Chapter 1.
The grace of God is universal and He desires that all men should be saved.

Chapter 2.
Small children are by no means to be excluded. If they are regarded as already baptized their salvation is not in doubt, even though they die.

Chapter 3.
If unbaptized, some are found outside of the Christian church. Of their blessed state after death, differing opinions are found among the learned.

Chapter 4.
Some are found in the Christian church. Their blessed state, if they depart this life without Baptism, is found in the advantage enjoyed by their parents as members of the kingdom of God.

Chapter 5.
Their advantage is shown also in the nature of Holy Baptism, although this is not unavoidably necessary, even as the circumcision in the Old Testament.

Chapters 6 and 7.
The words of the Savior are not contradicted. Compare John 3:5.

Chapter 8.
The foundation, upon which the blessed state of children rests, is faith.

Chapter 9.
How this is generated in unborn children.

Chapter 10.
By His omnipotence God is able to effect this faith in children, and in His wisdom and goodness He desires it.

Chapter 11.
We are convinced of the gracious will of God by examples both in the realm of nature and of grace, by which God previously proved His unrestricted omnipotence.

Chapter 12.
Such examples we encounter also in Holy Scripture, as in the instance of Jacob.

Chapter 13.
Jacob’s faith before birth is defended against some objections.

Chapter 14.
The example of John the Baptist is treated.

Chapter 15.
These two examples are defended against some Reformed scholars.

Chapter 16.
It is indicated how these examples are profitable in this discussion.

Chapter 17.
Examples are added in which God called persons before birth and dedicated them to holy service.

Chapter 18.
The true nature of the faith of children in the mother’s womb is shown.

Chapter 19.
It is an actual faith and not to be distinguished from that of adults according to its essence.

Chapter 20.
A further note against Reformed writers.

Chapter 21.
This faith of children before birth is their own, not another’s. With this the dissertation arrives at its conclusion.

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus
