Bio
I was raised in the Lutheran church. I attended a Lutheran day school from 1st grade through 8th grade, went to a Lutheran high school, and then a Lutheran university, where I promptly lost my faith in God while in the pastoral ministry program. This agonizing time of doubt and personal reflection resulted in a return to God and a passionate desire to spare others from having the same experience. (In retrospect, most of my "objections" to God and Christianity were weak. Only in my arrogance did I think they were strong). I remained in the pastoral ministry program but decided not to become a pastor.
At the end of my senior year I was asked to teach religion at a Lutheran high school in Mayer, Minnesota. I taught there for one year, got married, and moved to Rockford. In Rockford, my wife took a position as an elementary school teacher at a Lutheran grade school and a year later I took a position as a religion teacher at Rockford Lutheran, a junior and senior high school. After the birth of my first son, I took a position as a Director for Parish Ministries at a Lutheran church near La Crosse, Wisconsin.
With the birth of twin boys, life became chaotic in Wisconsin. The net result was that I resigned from the church in order to get a job I felt would be more likely to sustain my family. I became an over the road truck driver. A little less than a year later we determined as a family that I needed to come off the road. Ever since, I have been the "stay at home dad," writing books, speaking in various venues, and generally advancing my apologetics ministry.
Not too long ago, my wife and I had a fourth child, a girl (at last!). At the 20 week ultrasound they discovered that she had Spina Bifida and we were given the "choice" to "terminate" which we emphatically declined. This was a very hard time for us but eventually we "sucked it up" and prepared for life with our new daughter. Honestly, life has been good.
In large part, because of my experience with my daughter, I have of late spent more time writing and reflecting and, when opportunity arises, speaking on life issues. Even though I have always been passionately pro-life and energetically anti-abortion, I never felt like I had credibility to speak on the matter except in the abstract. That is no longer the case: I have passed the test. I believe that it would be nothing but selfishness if I did not share my story. Hopefully in the sharing lives can be saved.
Anthony has written a book about his experiences which tells his story and explains why he and his wife chose life in spite of being aware that their daughter would have Spina Bifida. The book, which is also one of Anthony's speaking topics, is called "We Chose Life: Why You Should Too." Learn more at www.wechoselife.com.
